The Ballarat Market (formerly the Trash and Trivia Market) opened on the 18th November 1979 and has been conducted at the Ballarat Showgrounds for all that time.
The market is a fun day out with stalls laden with second hand wares, hand made crafts, home grown plants and vegetables, sweet treats, food stalls and trestles of toys, trinkets, trash and treasure.
Members of the Rotary Club of Ballarat South initiated the project and have since been responsible for its operation on a purely voluntary basis. No professional organisers are used to run the market.
Other than some expenses incurred for example: rent and advertising, all proceeds have been distributed widely throughout the Ballarat area. As all the operations of the market are run by volunteers the maximum amount of funds possible are returned to the Ballarat and wider community though club projects and donations to community groups.
Many of the beneficiaries have included the Ballarat Sports and Arts Foundations, youth leaderships programs and financial assistance for cancer research. Among many other institutions who are also beneficiaries, each year the Club also finances the annual Charity Raffle where this year two cars and a caravan were financed by the Club for prizes.
The market is very well supported by the many stall holders who sell a variety of products and by the people/visitors of Ballarat who attend.
Trading hours are on Sunday between 8am and 1pm.
